BBC Lighting Workshop

On friday the 14th, we were lucky enough to be able to take part in a lighting and sound course with '21CC', a BBC outreach group that specialises in teaching key skills within the media industry.

As well as being led by the company's artistic director, we spent the day learning from 2 industry professionals, one called Shelly Love, a director specialising in the abstract and fantasy genre. Looking at some of her work, as a group we discussed how she uses light as a crucial element to engage an audience. She used alot of back and top lighting to create the effect of a surreal environment, giving her pieces a lighter, softer approach.
We also spent the day with ; a director of photography. His feild of work focused soley on the look of the shot and the dynmamic of the lighting. Making sure the effect of the light is used effectivly, and to the advantage of the director.
Before lunch , took us through a mini lighting course, teaching us the basics we needed to know. We learnt the differences between soft and hard, front, back, side and top lighting and little tricks like using gels to manipulate your shot's look.

Rule of thirds!!!

Starting off with a fun lesson on 'The rule of thirds'

9 imaginary sections of the the screen make up key focal points which prove vital when lining up a shot.

Positioning The eyes in the top middle section creates a view point for the audiences attention.

Most of the key points are managed by each corner in the rule of thirds.
